1) Look at the following information graphic broken down into a series of 4
images and answer the following questions:
The original photograph is called “Skull with cigarette, 2007” by Chris
Jordan. It has a caption below the photographs which reads: “Depicts
200,000 packs of cigarettes, equal to the number of Americans who die
from cigarette smoking every six months”. Why didn’t the photographer
just present the information in numbers? Why explain the statistics in
graphical form?
“Graphical excellence is that which gives to the viewer the greatest number of ideas
in the shortest time, with the least amount of ink in the smallest amount of
in the shortest time, with the least amount of ink in the smallest amount of
space”(Edward Tufte, 1983).
Why did the photographer prefer to explain the statistics in graphical form rather than
just present the information in numbers. In my opinion,At first,Graphic elements are
selected for their eye-catching.(Lester, P. M, 1995) Such as the photograph which is
called "skull with cigarette". A skull with a cigarette is so impressive when it appears
at first glance. There are so many information in newspaper. So when audience are
reading newspaper, their sights will be caught by the unique photograph easily.
Secondly,Information graphics tell a story using statistics and data. In this
increasingly visual age, communicator find that images and graphics often help
clarify factual accounts that in the past were the domain of word descriptions alone.

Information graphics can combine words and image. It can use words to
show details of data as well as can use images to show information clearly and make
audience remember information easily. Just like the photograph, from the image we
can profoundly know that smoking is bad for our physical health. The skull is
composed of so many packs of cigarettes, which means your body will become so bad
that just like a skull if you keep smoking. The image convey the idea that smoking
cigarettes can harm us over a period of time and even kills, and this message is clear
and easily to remember. On the other hand, this information graph also shows words.
"Depicts 200,000 packs of cigarettes, equal to the number of Americans who die
from cigarette smoking every six months." The words tell us that how smoking does
harm to our body in detail. It can show data to us,200,000 Americans die from
smoking every six months.

In conclusion, the photograph conveys all the information for easy understanding and
memorising visual communication. In this case, graphic form is better than only
presenting the information in numbers.
