1) Why is narrative important when shaping a visual image to the audience?
In the most general term,to narrate is to tell a story. Narration of any kind involves
the recounting and shaping of events (Peter Lamarque, 1994). A mere catalogue of
descriptive sentences does not make a narrative. For one thing, there must be events
described, not just things. Furthermore, the events must be shaped or ordered. Finally,
for every narrative there is a narrator, real or implied or both. Stories don't just exist,
they are told, and not just told but told from some perspective or other. (Peter
Lamarque, 1994)
But why is narrative important when shaping a visual image to audience? Because a
visual image tries to convey some important information to audience, such as
advertising wants to send information about their products to consumers. So an image
has to have meaning, in other words, tell a story to audience so that audience can
understand and remember it easily. If an image has no narrative, the visual impact will
be weakened greatly.
Like the photo below. The photo was posted to Chinese BBS and then was reported
over five thousands times. One of the reasons is that the photo has good narrative,
including story and discourse. Story is concerned with what is told while discourse is
concerned with how the narrative is told. (Seymour Chatman, 2004). First of all, from
this photo, we can know the place where the story happened by looking at the street
from the background. Secondly, we can know the main characters were old people
from their bent back and gray hair too. Thirdly, we can know the two old people they
were not rich judging by their clothes. What's more, we can got information from the
image is that the two old people, they were couple and they were still fall in love with
each other. Because in the photo they were holding their each other hands. The
photographer took the photo as a third person narrator, telling audience a touching
story,
Obviously, we can see from the photo that narrative plays an important role in shaping
a visual image to audience. Narrative is story-telling, which can help audience get the
information clearly and easily from narrators.
